SANDAL STORIES: THREE YEARS ON WITH JAMES AND HIS iX3.

As part of our Sandal Stories series, we sat down with long-standing customer James Rann to talk about life with his BMW iX3.

Three years after collecting the keys from our showroom, James has covered an impressive 75,000 miles - averaging around 25,000 miles per year on journeys of all lengths across the UK. From daily drives to cross-country trips, his iX3 has become a constant companion.

And his verdict? Electric motoring fits seamlessly into modern life.

Built for the Long Road.

For many drivers considering electric, long-distance travel is the big question mark. For James, it’s become a non-issue.

“Occupants inside the car need a break before the car does.”

Regular trips to the south coast and back are comfortably achievable with just one charging stop. With smart planning and a little routine, James says long journeys are straightforward and stress-free.

Charging Strategy That Works.

James has refined his approach over three years of electric driving.

Before a long trip, he charges to 100% at home - meaning the first “stop” is already done before he leaves the driveway. Once he reaches his destination, he’ll typically use public charging just once, topping up to around 80% - more than enough to get him home comfortably.

He also dispels a common myth about EV ownership:

“There’s this conception that every time the car stops and it’s on your driveway, you just plug it in - you don’t. On average, I think my car gets charged two to three times per week.”

Efficiency That Stands the Test of Time.

One of the biggest concerns for EV drivers is battery performance over time. Three years and 75,000 miles in, James has seen consistency from day one.

“Mileage efficiency, three years down the road, is the same as day one. It hasn’t changed - the figures haven’t changed on the dash.”

That reliability has reinforced his confidence in electric driving.

Smart Planning with the BMW App.

Technology plays its part too. James uses the BMW app to plan longer journeys, selecting preferred charging operators and mapping out exactly what works best for him.

The flexibility to tailor routes and charging stops gives him full control - and removes uncertainty from longer trips.

Regenerative Braking: A Standout Feature.

Another feature James loves is regenerative braking, particularly on long motorway drives.

By recovering energy while slowing down, the system helps maximise efficiency and extend range - something that really comes into its own on extended journeys.

Looking Ahead to the Next 75,000 Miles.

For James, the future is simple.

“I’m looking forward to keeping the car and continuing to drive electric, because with a modern-day lifestyle, the iX3 has proven itself.”

And perhaps the most reassuring comment of all:

“If it’s been alright for the first 75,000 miles, I know what’s in store for the next 75,000 - it’s going to be fine.”

Real experience. Real mileage. Real confidence in electric driving.

If you’re considering making the switch, James’ story shows what’s possible when electric performance meets everyday practicality.
